Dragonflysea
Greetings from Kentucky. Wandered across this forum trying to identify what looks like a fossilized vertebra I picked up roaming around with my nose to the ground. I've loved rocks ever since I picked up a huge chunk of fossilized wood as a little girl in Louisiana. Married into a family of stonemasons who used to drive into the creek and pick up the rocks for their jobs. They'd been masons for maybe 20 years and the first time I went to the creek with them I was the first of the family to find an arrowhead! Picked up all sorts of neat geodes and other pretty rocks through the years and have never stopped loving to pick little pretties. This thing was a big chunk that I thought was a geode. After dropping it into some vinegar to clean it up I was completely shocked to find this heavy fossil. Not sure if that little protrusion is some sort of barnacle or a tooth sticking out of it. Either way, this fossil is my pride and joy and would love help identifying it. Measurements: Front to back 6.5 cm (no spinous process) Left to right 5.5 cm Top to bottom 3.5 cm Weight 195.75 gm Feels a bit waxy. When picked up it seems heavier than it looks. Thanks! Fin Lover
Michele, welcome to the forum from South Carolina (but originally from Kentucky)! Fin Lover My favorite things about fossil hunting: getting out of my own head, getting into nature and, if I’m lucky, finding some cool souvenirs. Fossildude19
Moved to FOSSIL ID. Looks more like a chert nodule or concretion to me. Brandy Cole
Welcome to the forum! It's good that you took pictures from several angles and used the ruler, but I think this would really benefit from a couple of close-up pictures of the texture in full sunlight. I'm not convinced yet what it could be. Especially the angles you're showing in your third and fifth pictures would benefit from full sunlight to help us see the texture and features better. Michele Nice description, good photos... Not sure , but the shape /texture seems to imply more than rock... Do you find other fossils at this location? Ludwigia
I'm also getting a concretionary vibe from this. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Mark Kmiecik
I'm leaning gently towards wood. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
