Rapetosaurus leg bone with skin?

Recommended Posts

hey , I purchased this leg bone in Tucson. The dealer told me that is a sauropod dinosaur leg bone from the Cretaceous strata of Madagascar. The key point is that the leg bone is attached with skin. I found that these black "skin" has wrinkles similar to real skin. Is this black "skin" real dinosaur skin?

I searched some materials. Professor Kristi Curry Rogers found that Rapetosaurus had skin ossification.

I would like to hear more comments, thank you!

I'm aware that Rapetosaurus had osteoderms, is that what you are referring too?

No real skin is visible just bone.

Question how do you know this bone comes from that species and not another titanosaurid.  Did that dealer provide you with a locality and Formation where it was found?

The dealer only said that it was the Cretaceous strata. I know the importance of the location, but my information is just that. When I searched for relevant materials, I only saw the description of the skin ossification of the Predator. I am sorry for my carelessness. Texture feels different from other bones, What do you think of this black wrinkled "skin"?

It's not skin it's bone,  the markings could have occured post mortem along with the texture of the bone.  The osteoderms noted in that publication would be quite evident.

Rogers at all 2011

Without any provenance it's difficult to call this anything but an indeterminate titanosaurid.  And even that this may be from the jurassic of Madagascar.

Thank you for your patient explanation. Besides Rapetosaurus krausei, are there any other titanosaurid species described? I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with this area. I only have this material from Madagascar. Or is there any relevant topic for me to read

Well it all depends on where this bone came from.  Given that the dealer did not provide you much information everything he said is very suspect.  I'll even say Ive not seen that black color deposit mostly greys and browns, might be there, so I dont know, lots of red flags.

Rapetosaurus is described from the Maevarano Formation. Vahiny depereti and Titanosaurus indicus are other Titanosaurids from that deposit.
