Hi, I live on the Isle of Wight which I know has a good reputation for fossil finds so I want to make the most of living here and get out looking for some. I was just wondering if there are any laws regarding fossil hunting like if I find something am I allowed to keep it or do some things have to be declared if found in certain areas. I know with metal detecting there are some regulations that can catch you out. Thanks.

I was once accosted at Alum Bay whilst collecting and told that I couldn't take anything from there. 

But these people were just locals who sold the coloured sands and had no right to stop me, back then it was perfectly acceptable to collect anywhere, as far as I know, but that was thirty plus years ago. 

Many of our members have been collecting on the Isle of Wight with no bother as far as I am aware.

If you put Isle of Wight into the search function, you'll come up with some members who collect there regularly to whom you could send a PM or two.
