Meganeura
Okay so @fossillarry you’re either going to love me or hate me after this, so I apologize in advance - a friend of mine gave me a bunch of 3-toed horse teeth he’s found hunting in the Gainesville area. 13 of em, in fact. I got measurements and the best pics I can of the chewing surfaces, let me know if I need more pics. Measurements are Width of chewing surface x Height of chewing surface. All in mm. 1) 23.5x17.8 2) 17x16.8 3) 15.7x12.8 4) 13.1x11.3 5) 25.3x19.1 6) 25x16 7) 18.7x14.1 8) 16.2x9.6 9) 19.8x10.1 10) 21.6x13.1 11) 16.8x7.2 12) 14.5x9.2 13) 14x6.4 @fossillarry Thank you so much in advance! @Shellseeker a few of these might be recognizable to you, hopefully? Meganeura
So just as I’ve been looking/comparing them, I believe 2 and 3 are Cormohipparion ingenuum, and I believe 11, 12, and 13 are Nannippus aztecus. @fossillarry does that sound right to you? Not a clue in hell about the others. Fossils? I dig it.
Family Fun
I have one similar to 7, so looking forward to the opinions of the experts.
Meganeura
Further research has been done, and I believe 9 and 10 are Neohipparion sp. Not sure how to narrow them down to species, though. I also think 5 is a Cormohipparion Ingenuum M3? @fossillarry when you get around to these, I'd love to know your thought process/steps you take to identify them (Assuming you have time, of course!), i've just been comparing to Hulbert's book. fossillarry
This is an interesting group of teeth. Numbers 1,3 and 7 are Cormohipparion ingenuus. Numbers 9 and 10 are { believe Neohipparion trampasense. Numbers 5,6 11,12,13 and and probably 2,4 and 8 are Nannippus westoni. If these identifications are correct it would indicate a Late Clarendonian or Early Hemphillian age. This is not a commonly collected time period and as I like to say go collect more specimens from this locality and show then on the Forum. Very nice finds

fossillarry
Yes Meganeura you were correct about number 13 as well as your ID for Neohipparion. Good detective work.

Meganeura
@fossillarry Hey Larry - is it possible #4 is N. morgani and not N. westoni? Just due to the very big size difference, I wanted to check with you and make sure! The patterns look very similar but the size seems to fit morgani more. Same for 13 and possibly 12, as well - morgani instead of westoni? Edited February 8, 2023 by Meganeura Fossils? I dig it.
