devonian fish prep

I am just doing a rare Coccosteus from Egerton fish beds, Tain, Scotland

Normally not worth for a story, but this is a fossil I stored now for nearly 40 years... Got it from a friend in parts, never started the prep because I expected it will be bad

Last weeks I started to finish it, glued and filled the cracks and started working

Only with air pen (HW70 and 10). Wow, the skull and the complete armour are preserved and perhaps the body. Never expected this....

Have not done a pic when I started, but today I thought it iw worthy

The site is closed due to vandalism in the 80th, so its nearly impossible to get material from there

Fishes are preserved more 3-dimensional, not flat, always in nodules

Lenght of the nodule is approx 30 cmIMG_1238.thumb.JPG.c37b54152dc72ebd16454109695415e3.JPG

I will update when its ready, think in April

the second pics shows the situation when I started, only the inner parts could be seen and mainly covered with matrix

little bit more done, all the scutes and parts are free. Little bit of the body is under the matrix, will be removed next days. Looks like the scleral ring is preserved and lower jaw, wow

Next work will be to finish it, remove the scratches and make it more beauty

Loving this, especially as its from a classic site, sadly like many many others here in the UK, no longer accessible. Looking forward to the prep completed.

thanks, I will do my very best. Many sites had been closed to vandalism. Cannot understand why collectors do like this...

next steps are: prepp away some parts around the skull, go deeper in the front and search for parts of the column. And, prep the sleral-ring, looks like most of it is preserved, but...

I think now there are so many ways to buy specimens, greed is involved, so classic localities are plundered for financial gain . Plus over zealous collecting whereby collectors take everything they can take home. Hope the preparation and development of the fish specimen is coming on well.

I know two of the three guys who destroyed the place with the nodules 40 years ago... Greed, nothing more than greed. Moremoremoremore, mymymymymy, this was there aim. I have seen the cellar of one of them, full of unprepped fossils from good sites....

.... such a shame and the fossils are lost to science and the chance of specialist  to study them and record them for future researchers...
