Original Carcharodontosaurus teeth?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to expand my collection by buying a tooth of Carcharodontosaurus (or rather of Carcharodontosauridae, as far as I understand it is impossible to understand the species with 100% accuracy).

So I'm inspecting some sites of reputable and trustworthy sellers, but still I'm always afraid of finding heavily reworked or restored teeth.

I'm not convinced by the root: authentic? completely artificial? restored?

Second tooth: also from Kem Kem Beds, length 6 cm. Can it be authentic or composite?

A trustworthy or reputable seller does not guarantee you're getting the proper  ID or that the seller is aware of repair or resto.  Always verify, like your doing, NEVER assume the information provided is spot on.

We really do not understand the theropod fauna in the KK.  So it's very possible multiple Carcharodontosaurids exist, two are currently described.

The second tooth is fine, nice color, not the best preservation.  There are a lot nicer Carcharodontosaurid teeth on the market.

The first tooth the Crown has some fill, broken in two areas and reattached but there are red flags with the root.  See the matrix just below my red line, with such a clean crown the root area next to the crown should be similar.  The root typically taper down not bulges out.  I think it's a composite but would require hand examination to be sure.

My recommendation if you're buying teeth from the Kem Kem is that they should be a slam dunk good,  no issues about it being real or resto.  If there is any questions about an item move on, lots of material is available on the open market.

What size is the first crown?

Thanks @Troodon

Could you give me an opinion on this tooth too? The provenance is indicated simply "Taouz". Length 5.2cm.
