regainfreedom
Hi, I have recently purchased this fossil but I am not sure what this is except that it is from Indonesia. It appears to be of a partial tooth of a stegodon. Anyone have any idea what this is?
Fruitbat
regainfreedom... Definitely an elephant tooth fragment of some kind. Not being overly familiar with Indonesian elephants, I can't really venture a guess even as to genus. Do you have any idea how OLD it is? That little tidbit of information would certainly be helpful. -Joe Illigitimati non carborundum Fruitbat's PDF Library
MOROPUS
It looks a lot to those fossils coming from Java i`ve seen this last years on trade fairs. If they are from Java, they are last Pliocene-first Pleistocene, due to the human remains find at the Solo river there (2 million years?) Thanks.
Bill
Apparently Stegodon is derived from the genus Stegolophodon, an extinct genus known from the Miocene of Asia. Stegodon is considered to be a sister group of the mammoth, as well as the elephants. Some taxonomists consider the stegodonts as a subfamily of the Elephantidae. Both Stegolophodon and primitive elephants were derived from the Gomphotheriidae. KOF, Bill. Welcome to the forum, all new members www.ukfossils check it out.
