fossiladdict
Ok, I admit it, I was like a kid in a candy store when it came to this trip and I'm sure some of you are questioning my sanity at this point, BUT this was the first trip that I have been on with a "group" and the whole trip was exciting and almost overwhelming, because there were so many people to meet, places to go and fossils to find! Thank you MikeD for taking us all over. Also, thanks MikeD and JohnJ for the gifts! Found some wonderful fossils, met some awesome fellow fossilers and experienced some beautiful scenery! Now for lots of pictures... Our first location for Friday, MikeD had to get us there as it was down this road and down that road but we found it. Here's MikeD and Aliza and another looking: Made MikeD take a pic with me: Edited March 22, 2011 by fossiladdict Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! fossiladdict
The next day we all hit the spillway first thing. MikeD was creative and decided to go after those urchins! Aliza was busy hammering her chunk out too: Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! Makes you all giddy inside! fossiladdict
Of course, I had to give it a try to. I quickly realized that if I was to look elsewhere at the spillway I better hurry up and get my chunk out. JohnJ and his nephew came and here they are traversing through the spillway: Dustin is near the ledge by the sea urchins: Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! fossiladdict
We had to leave early Saturday so missed the rest of the trip, but Sunday I took my mom and sister out to find the small things in my area. Here's a few of the ones I found; I gave several to an older gentleman that was out there for the children's museum he worked at as well. The teeth fit on my pinky finger to give you an estimate of their size. Whew, what a weekend! Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! MikeD
Let me say that fossiladdict and Ruby Tuesday are the most fossil crazed women I have ever seen. They are awesome! The pics of that tooth are great. It is really a strange one. It was a fun trip and nice to meet you and Dustin. Looks like you got some good stuff. You would have really enjoyed Sunday morning. I can identify some of your shells and stuff in the first pic. Looks like you have two conularids (at the bottom), some Worthenia (the pointy gastropod), the one under that big Worthenia may be Glabrocinculum, Straparollus (look similar to ammonites), maybe some Bellepheron and Pharkidonotus. You have to look at those two pretty close. The horn corals, brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids, urchin spines and plates are pretty obvious from a generic level. The rice crispy looking things are the fusilinid Triticites. You have some in matrix and some hiding in the horn coral. I'll post some pics soon. LanceHall's web pages have some good pics with ID's. Look at the Pennsyvanian stuff.
Texas Fossil Hound
Wow! Talk about a fossil binge weekend! Looks like you guys had a blast. LOVE the Petalodus tooth! It is very unusual. "Silence is Golden, but duct tape is Silver."

Roz
Wow, all kinds of finds but I am lovin that tooth the best.. Brownwood is a fun place to hunt for sure Welcome to the forum!
erose
Dang! That tooth is incredible AND I don't believe it is a Petalodus. Petalodus has a very distinct shape. It is something quite different and like nothing I have seen myself or in collections. Maybe a Jansassa sp. One other question: how many folks were at the Wilson Clay Pit? I was thinking of heading up that way but if two dozen collectors were in there for hours I will wait until after the next big rains. But only a handful would leave plenty behind. thair
I think the tooth is "Petalodus seratodus" but the one I have dose not have the root section perserved.
BobC
The trip was amazing. Pictures of the Wilson pit do NOT do it justice. It has to be seen to be believed! It was like walking across the surface of Mars--and the rock there ranged in color from tan to green to bright purple to blue to red! It was surreal. The spillway was magnificent as well--you could feel yourself going back in time. Lexy had an amazing knowledge of Brownwood history (did you know the town is the exact center point of Texas?) and it was so cool meeting Neal! Man that guy knows his paleontology! Plus, he was refreshingly eccentic, with eye brows longer than the hair on his head, and he gave me sass all day long! I was moaning that I had found 10,000 spines but not a single archeocidaris, and asked Neal if he knew of another place to try to find them. He replied there was a "secret spot" that they might go to on Sunday, and I said but Neal, I have to drive back to Austin tonight. "THAT ISN'T MY PROBLEM!!!" he replied, warmly! Another classic quote came when I decided to engage him in a debate about what became of the Neanderthals. I asked him what his view was, and without batting an eye, he bellowed "WE ATE THEM!!!" I busted out laughing! I could have listened to him yap all day long. Edited March 22, 2011 by BobC
