Two Mystery Snails

Ok I have two snails I'm having trouble identifying. Maybe someone here knows.

Here is a small Cretaceous snail from the Duck Creek/Fort Worth Limestone in Tarrant county (100 mya).

Here is a Pennsylvanian Period snail from the Finis shale in Jack county (300 mya).

I don't believe it's a "Shansiella".

Now that I looked at my files I do think the second gastropods is a Shansiella

the you may want to check out Hemizyga for first gastropod

Here is my Shansiella from a different location:

The Shansiella is more compact with the whorls set more into each other. Also the lines around the whorls are fewer.

Lance,

I also found something very similar, but from the lower (dark) Finis Shale. Just as you, I did not feel it truly fit Shansiella. I found Platyzona sp. in a New Mexico publication that matched much better. But it's still a tentative ID since I haven't found other references for Platyzona.

  • 8 years later...

A little over 8 years later I have confirmed the ID of your second specimen as Platyzona hespera Kues & Batten, 2001.  I found a second good specimen and also managed to get a PDF of the paper. PM me if you want a copy.

I was looking at the first gastropod and didn't even realize this was from 2011 until I read down to @erose post!  Oh well, better late than never.  I am not familiar with Hemizyga, but I thought the first one looked like it could be a Rissoa texana.  Here is a snapshot out of Stanton 1947.  Maybe @LanceH already has a better ID?
