masonboro37
Well, another little find at Wrightsville Beach, NC. I am still so new to fossil collecting, but have been trying to ID this online and in my fossil books. Maybe a whale or porp. bone. Pretty excited about this because it will be my first one, if that is what it is. Measurments: 40mm x 25mm Any help is appreciated! Process of identification "mistakes create wisdom". I thought it was bone, hmmmmm.... just need to research and find out more. Thank you. Process of identification "mistakes create wisdom".
RickNC
Well worn shard of bone. I doubt it can be really identified beyond that.
masonboro37
At least agreeable id of bone. Thanks for the help. Process of identification "mistakes create wisdom".
Tarheel59
If you are finding large pieces of bone some teeth are possibly there also. Once you have found one not to far to know that the other is around the corner. I keep all my larger pieces or interesting bones. Never know if you find a piece of something really cool. Thanks for sharing and I would keep checking that spot out and maybe even screen some of that area.. Jeff/Tarheel
masonboro37
Thank you Jeff! I will go back to the area and search. I did find a point and some pottery shards there too. Process of identification "mistakes create wisdom".
crash471
Yes, this is whale bone, in my opinion. here are some pieces that I have collected. The cell structure/texture is what what will help identify this type of fossil.
