I found a very large ceph fragment Is there a way to figure out the approximate size from a fragment?

Can you see any tapering to the specimen? Perhaps you could calculate how long the specimen would have to be to come to a point.

Great find! B)

I have a complete Endoceras phragmocone that is similar in width at the end. Presuming that this shell tapered about the same as mine, when complete, yours may have been around 20" long.

If you figure out the genera from the siphuncle you might be able to figure out an estimate. You have the phragmocone in tact which is good.

Thanks for the info. I had to look up phragmocone :)

Hi Ameenah, here's one very similar to yours (also from middle Tn.) This one is from the Lebanon Limestone, Upper Ordovician. Phragmacone and living chamber, large centrally placed siphuncle, so probably Endoceras(?).

you could either use a little trig to answer your question, or just slap 2 straight edges on opposite sides of the taper and measure to the intersection.
