jpc
the picture is too blurry... but it looks like some kind of pyritized fossil. Pyrite= fools goold, so your not the first to confuse it with gold.

jpc
better... I'm no expert at the stuff out there, but it looks even more like a pyritized orthoceras type fossil. Google orthoceras and see if any of the pix that come up look like yours...
Fossildude19
I would agree with pyritized cephalopod. Probably Ordovician in age. Neat find. johnnie1
the top of the gold is like a nozzle and is still in its form and its a perfect circle with a lil tip i have always thoght this was some alien stuff
AgrilusHunter
Hi johnnie1, I'm seeing a cephalopod too. Maybe some better images would help. The colors and lighting in the second image are pretty good, but it is still a bit out of focus. jpc
Hi johnnie- OK, if you think it is man-made, have a look at thisone from the same area, and tell us why you think yours is man-made. It looks nature-made to at least two of us. http://www.thefossil...d-of-the-month/ edit: um three of us.
Fossildude19
The "nozzle" is where the siphuncle for the cephalopod was, and that end did not get crushed flat like the rest of it. I'm pretty confident on the pyritized cephalopod id. Another similar one CLICK HERE. Another LINK. Fossildude19
Here's a pic from the web showing similar structures. I think you are seeing the rounded end of a chamber and siphuncle with parts surrounding it worn away. Here's a diagram of what the critters looked like. And if it eroded differently it might look like this - Voila` - very similar "nozzle" to your fossil. It's a very cool fossil. jpc
The last picture says it all. That is defintely an orthoceras type shell. It is crushed, so only slightly 3 dimensional. Look at fossildude19's picture with the black stuff describing how yours fell apart, oh so many years ago. Bingo. That little nipploid projection is indeed the siphuncle, and the circular surface is the shape of the sutures. Thanks for posting better pix. garyc
Johnnie, I can certainly see why you thought this was man-made. Had me fooled too. Very cool fossil.
Jesse
I agree with jpc, but that is an incredible find! On the plus side you should email the Ancient Aliens producers, they would eat that beauty up!
