jotto1
Hello - Would appreciate any help in identifying this item. I was recently on vacation (last week) in St. Coix USVI and on a untouched rocky beach found this at the waters edge. Locaion Here Shape makes me think it is possibly a tooth... but due to location I am not sure what it could be (possibly a Whale?) and or if it is just a piece of coral from local reefs. Please let me know if any more information/ pictures would be helpful. Thank you in advance for your help.

Auspex
It is a vertebra, and it appears recent. 1 "There has been an alarming increase in the number of things I know nothing about." - Ashleigh Ellwood Brilliant “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.” - Thomas Henry Huxley >Paleontology is an evolving science. >May your wonders never cease! jotto1
Thank you for the quick responses! Okay, bone & vertebra... any idea what kind of fish this is from? Know we are off topic now as not a fossil but would love to ID where it is from. Maybe mahi mahi? Seems fairly large for vertebra based on fish I saw down there scuba diving. RichW9090
Not a fish, it is a mammal. It is one of the mid-thoracic vertebrae, perhaps the 6th or 7th. Medium sized mammal - appears to be dog. Edited April 17, 2013 by RichW9090 1 The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".

Thanks Rich. Yes after researching some pictures of Dog vertebrae that appears to be exactly what it is!! Really appreciate the help; at least now I know what I have (garbage ).
