Best Find From My Trip To Malta

Hi,

i just got back from a trip to Malta. Just wanted to show my best find, a small Meg, about 3 cm (don't know what this is in inches). This is the only complete tooth i found, all others have root-damage so i'm quite pleased this one came out complete . It was actually found at Gozo, the smaller much quieter island next to Malta.

Super nice tooth - congrats! Is the formation that area between the wall and the beach? Are you allowed to chip away at the material to get at the fossils?

Could that be an angustidens? I ask because I see the cusps and the slimmer profile. The enamel and color of that tooth are beautiful!

3cm is just a bit larger than one inch. (1 in = 2.54 cm)

hi Cowsharks (or is it Daryl) ?,

Yes it's that formation, actually slightly under it. There's lot's of interesting layers at Malta and Gozo but i have focused on these pale yellow layers. They a called Globiregina Limestone. Divided in Lower, Middel and Upper by two so called conglomerate beds (C1 and C2). This is the C1. I think i found the C2 bed too but i'm not sure, did not find anything in there.

I don't think it's forbidden too look for fossils at this site, i didn't see any signs for example. There was no heavy mining, the top of this bed is very hard, as stated the teeth are slightly under it and the material is softer there... Exporting fossils used too be illegal though. The current situation is somewhat unclear to me....

This is likely from the Oligocene then...C. angustidens is certainly possible.

Hi Skylla,

From what i've read the angustidens can be found in the C1 layer, chubutensis are found in the C2 layer. Others say this is all the same, they are all Megalodon. I don't know, all i can tell is that i'm extremely pleased with it. Gr,Marcel
