Little Help With This One

Found this in gmr which has Cretaceous through Pleistocene fossils. As you can see there are several partials of the same pattern on this rock. Definitely some symmetry going on here. I've never seen anything like it from this location.

Very interesting Rick, I have never seen anything like it from GMR. Is it bone like, as Tom suggested?

Your fossil is a large dermal denticle from the stingray Dasyatis centroura. This species is still in North Carolina waters today. Yours is probably from the Yorktown Formation. Here are a couple from the Lee Creek Mine Yorktown Formation.

I've been looking at it to see if it was bone but the structure is different than the typical bone I find there.

Thanks Al Dente, that looks like a good match though your picture seems to indicate an elevated center while mine here has a pit in the center with a small raised bit right in the middle of the pit. I am sure you're correct but I noticed that difference. This one looks a bit worn as well though.

Rick,

Nice find. Could it be an impression of the denticles since it has a rock like appearance?
