Bundenbach Display At 2014 Ny/nj Fossil, Gem And Mineral Show

Hi all! So I uploaded a bunch of photos over in the main thread regarding the 2014 NY/NJ Fossil, Gem & Mineral show but I wanted to post separately about the display of fossils from the Bundenbach area of Germany. The show had four display cases of fossils that were found in the slates from the quarries around Bundenbach with most of them being Crinoids or Starfish. The fossils were impressive but some specimens lacked tags telling you what they were. Interestingly there were a few fossils that were featured in a booklet that was displayed next to them. The author was set up as a dealer nearby and I got his autograph on a copy of his booklet.

First off are pics of the cases:

Geologists on the whole are inconsistent drivers. When a roadcut presents itself, they tend to lurch and weave. To them, the roadcut is a portal, a fragment of a regional story, a proscenium arch that leads their imaginations into the earth and through the surrounding terrain. - John McPhee

Now, onto the fossils. Some photos are better than others. I used my cell phone to get the pics and between lack of good lighting and the glass between the fossils and myself, not everything came out as sharp as one would like.

Cool love Bundenbach material. I have several of the trilobites from there including a small lateral with all the legs, and a large ventral with remnant leg material and another large dorsal I found at Tucson which may have legs (out for preparation to see if it does there is small hole in glabella where you can see an antennae and other stuff so there is a good possibility). Thanks for shareing. I have a few crinoids still in my collection as well as a nearly complete Mimetaster hexagonalis

Thanks for sharing this. It's nice to see that these special German fossils have a good following over here. Who is that author that you mentioned, if I may ask?

Thanks Russ, I'd like to see that Mimetaster if you get a chance to post it.

Thanks Nathan!

Yikes! I thought I'd included him into the description but I didn't. His name was Thomas Perner.

Hey Dave, well I thought I updated this thread but I guess it never took. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing the photos of that locale's material.

There are some phenomenal German sites with really breathtaking specimens! I have a tiny Bundenbach sample somewhere.

Regards, Chris

Chris, No problem. Bundenbach is one of those important Lagerstatte sites that is amazing even exists. To think that many of these fossils are undistorted or barely distorted, even after the pressures and heat required to turn the original shale into slate, amazes me.

This display was more impressive to me than the T. Rex at the show. Thank you for posting these pictures so we can re-visit these amazing fossils. :D

I also have to say Thanks for sharing, for those of us who never get to see this type of display (or the dealer! I guess our little Island shows are too small or far away to attract this kind of thing). Pick up one of those Mimetasters for me too while you're at it! (yeah right).. Those have to be descendents of Marella, the central parts in particular are the giveaway.

No Problem, Wish I could have taken clearer photos of the rest! Some of the Crinoids were amazing.

I think they are classified as a Marellamorph.
