Are all three photos the same specimen? The first photo reminds me of solidified tar/asphalt. Looks pretty cool though! Good luck with an ID!

It looks like weathered jasper to me - which is a specific type of chert. Next time I'm out, I'll try picking up some that we find in New Mexico.

Jasper can be multi-colored, including that dark side. And I found one image of "Outback Jasper" that had similar looking graininess. When I get back home today, if you haven't found it or solved this I'll post what I found (pictures have to be uploaded to photobucket then put in here). I'm on my way out the door right now.

I don't see any fossils, but I'm also an amateur.

Looks like a limonite pseudomorph after pyrite to me. This is the result of a decomposing pyrite nodule. Jasper can look the same but a streak test and hardness test will differentiate them.
