jpwhite82
Here's another questionable specimen that I have wavered back and forth on for years. I have always leaned towards the specimen being a rock but the line down the middle has always made me second guess myself. Like 90% of my collection I found this one at Topsail Island, NC. Thanks in advance for the help! Image 1 of

tmaier
Not a fossil. Possibly an indian artifact, a tool. If the groove is on both sides, it could be a fishing sinker. If only on on side then it might have been a burnishing tool. It looks like an abrasive stone, so possibly for smoothing an arrow shaft. You might want to take it to a web site that specializes in indian artifacts.
jpwhite82
Thanks guys! Over the years it never dawned on me that I could be looking at a Native American artifact despite my history/ archaeology background. I'll be sure to run it by my colleagues that specialize in that field. Thanks again!
