Trilobite

Since I had so much success with the ammonite I recently collected, I decided to dive right in on a trilobite I've been looking at for about 30 years ( :( ) that I collected in college. I always figured there was more to this little guy than what was showing (all that was showing was the right portion of the cephalon) but never took the time to give it a try.

I made a few test swipes with the engraver and the grinder; the grinder is almost useless, as there is something in the limestone that gums it up and turns black (you can see the results on the lower left.)

The engraver, however, easily turns the matrix to powder almost instantly. 30 minutes with the engraver, and I think I might have a complete bug, maybe even enrolled:

and there looks to be a couple more bugs in the block!

Well, I guess all I've got is a cephalon. The left side is pretty crushed up, and I couldn't see any evidence of body segments beyond the back of the shield, but I spent a little more time and cleaaned up some of the other stuff coming out of the matrix, and it makes a pretty good piece:

A most attractive slab; good work!

Cool! I love seeing a hunk of rock with a few lumps coming out of it turn into an amazing display piece.
