ronkandroll
Hi, I was hoping someone might know what this is. Ifound it in the woods under a tree root. It looks like it may be corral or a sea sponge. Any help would be great.

Plax
you must be in a Yorktown, Waccamaw or such Formation area. If you found this in a tree root there are certainly more fossils around.
ronkandroll
Actually I am in the Raleigh N.C area. I am new around here and didn't know you could find fossils like that around here
Plax
If this was found right in Raleigh I'd say someone dumped it there. There are some rare eocene exposures near town but this coral doesn't look like something from the Castle Hayne formation. If you are east of Raleigh there are Yorktown formation exposures around Tarboro, Rocky Mount etc. Not really "Raleigh area" though I suppose. You should join the North Carolina Fossil Club. they meet in Raleigh. You can google them for more information.
