Fossilized Wood?

collector

Recommended Posts

I was hunting in the upper Devonian today which was a spectacular day in Western NY and came back with exactly one fossil. I am wondering if is is fossilized wood and what could be the small unknowns found around it. The ?wood is ~2inches x 1inch. The small unknowns are between 3-8mm. It may take more than one message for the pictures. I recently acquired a microscope and am trying to get clear pictures and finding it somewhat challenging. Hopefully these are OK. Thanks for looking.

Interesting!

Certainly looks woody to me.

Not sure what the others are, though.

Thanks Fossildude19. I was hoping that it was petrified wood as it is my first piece. Those other fossils though I can't figure out. They seem associated with the wood as they are down the side of it and then if you turn the rock they are in a line from the wood and if you turn the rock again they are still in that line. There are a few showing spine around them.

Patti,

I am definitely seeing cross sections of something there, but whether they are gastropods, brachiopods, or pelecypods, I just cannot tell.

Can we see a pic of the other side, and maybe a few whole piece views?

Oh, and please, call me Tim. Fossildude19 is too long to type. :)

OK Tim. Here are some whole piece views. The rock is ~ 4in x 4in.

Patti,

Thanks for the additional views. Great pictures, btw.

Yeah I guess I would say gastropod cross sections on many of those shapes. Some look like they might be forams of some sort? Sorry, not my strongpoint.

Hard to tell for sure without prepping around some of the shapes to see what they might be.

Very neat piece - looks very dense, like limestone or dolostone - almost chert-y.

Thanks Tim,

I don't have any experience with forams. I will have to look into them. It is an interesting piece and I am happy to have a piece of petrified wood.
