sixgill pete Posted February 15, 2015 Share Posted February 15, 2015 (edited) With all of this bitter cold weather here in Eastern NC the last couple of days, I have spent the time indoors searching some matrix from the Paleocene Aquia Formation, Piscataway member Charles County Maryland. Also cataloging and photographing my finds. I thought I would share some of the photo's here. I have tried to ID the teeth as best as possible, if anyone has any other thoughts on these please feel free to post them. Anomotodon novus .... Unknown, possibly Scyliorhinus sp. or Abdounia sp. ...... Brachycarcharias lerichei .... Cretalamna appendiculata ... Delpitoscyllium africanum ..... Galeorhinus sp. .... Megasqualus orpiensis ... I think the one you labelled as Abdounia is a catshark I went back and forth on this ID between Abdounia and Scyliorhinus before I settled on Abdounia, not really sure why. Possibly for the width versus height. I also considered Triakis. I've been collecting some matrix so that I have something to sort through this summer when it gets too hot and the water rivers/creeks too high to do any hunting here in Florida. Don't have as much matrix as I was hoping for by this time though as we've been having a pretty wet winter and a lot of the rivers/creeks have been too high to hunt in. I found getting matrix's from a variety of locations is a great way to not only expand your collection, but also to learn about species and geological time frames that are not available to you in your location. Khyssa, the winter has been very wet here also. But, our winters are usually kind of wet. Hopefully you will get all the matrix you want before the summer. If not, there are many of us on here who trade/sell matrix. siteseer Posted February 18, 2015 Share Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) I think it is also a catshark but haven't found a match from the Aquia or Nanjemoy (wouldn't hurt to go through any Early Eocene teeth to check for something like it). However, I did find a similar tooth described as a lateral of Foumtizia abdouni (catshark) from the Late Paleocene of Morocco (see Noubhani and Cappetta, 1997, plate 30, fig. 5a, . In the text it is noted as known at the moment only from the Late Paleocene of Morocco but I would expect many forms from there to be some of the unknowns that wash out of the Aquia. The Atlantic wasn't as wide and cold then. Jess Noubhani, A and H. Cappetta. 1997. sixgill pete Posted February 19, 2015 Author Share Posted February 19, 2015 Jess, looking at this I also found another paper; TATIANA MALYSHKINA, Late Eocene scyliorhinid sharks from the Trans−Urals, Russia with an eerily similar tooth Foumtizia zhelezkoi. It is also similar in some respects to the Scyliorhinid sharks of the Paleocene and early Eocene of Belgium. So, at this point am going to ID it as either Foumtizia sp. or Scyliorhinid undet.
