Miatria
I'm going rock collecting again and I would appreciate tips on the cheapest way to ship lots of rocks. I plan on bringing back way more than a couple flat rate boxes and "overweight baggage" charges on the airline will be excessive. Thoughts? jpc
If you are staying in the US/Canada, maybe drive.

Raggedy Man
Depending on your destination, I completely agree with JP...driving allows for many options flying does not. ...I'm back.
Wrangellian
Also if you need to ship via USPS or any other carrier, it has been suggested to take photos of everything before you ship.
bone digger
Depends on what you mean by "lots". When I get my carving stone I either drive and pick it up or get it hauled by a trucking company for a few hundred bucks. But that is usually 2000-4000 pounds. amour 25
Strange but use a U-haul van and take it home yourself. If you ship large heavy boxes most will be smashed and lost broken , and the money you save you can apply to a Van. $645.47 for 7 days and 2000 miles , here in OK a 9' van. sixgill pete
USPS Priority mail you can ship a large priority mail box, up to 70 pounds anywhere in the 50 states for $17.90. And you get free $50 of insurance and free tracking. And if you purchase the postage online instead of at the post office it is $15.80 Edited April 14, 2015 by sixgill pete Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt behind the trailer, my desert Them red clay piles are heaven on earth I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt Patterson Hood; Drive-By Truckers May 2016 May 2012 Aug 2013, May 2016, Apr 2020 Oct 2022
TNCollector
I agree with six gill pete. Just make sure you wrap each specimen in bubble wrap or something else like that to keep them protected from bumps and such. Even though the postal services claims to handle fragile objects properly, I have seen even sturdy objects come back broken. Also, make sure you get tracking on your package! Miatria
Thank you for all the great suggestions! Driving will be problematic due to time constraints. Lots of good ideas to think about. Thanks again, everyone! Zookeeperfossils.com
Sacha
Where are you going Aimee? My wife and I are talking about going to Rapid City, SD where I went to college for a while and I will be wondering how to get my stuff back as well. I'll be interested in what you wind up doing, how much you ship back and how satisfied you were.
Miatria
John, I'm going to Arizona, Utah, and Wyoming with a few fossil friends. I'm always in a rush because, bummer, I have to work (come on, lottery ticket!) otherwise I would drive. Anyway, I'll let you know.
