Sorry, I promise not to be a pita and ask a question a day. Is this an early mammal tooth or it is from a critter that died and fell into the river some time in the past?

Give us a shot looking directly down on the chewing surface (known as an 'occlusial view', this is the best for identifying mammal teeth).

Right m2, Procyon lotor, the raccoon.
