Mystery Object Embedded In Platybelodon Tooth Root

Hello everyone, I obtained this Platybelodon tooth from a fellow collector. I believe it might be of Chinese origin.

There is a textured gray object embedded in the root/jaw bone. It seems to be much more solid than the surrounding brittle white bone.

Any guesses as to what the gray object may be?
