garyc
Thank God I have a daughter in North Texas. It gives me an excuse to get to the North Sulphur River. I've been experiencing DT's because the Brazos has been flooded for the last month, and does not seem to be going down. So, my son and I were able to get out on the NSR for a few hours and made some nice finds. This is one of the better finds and there seems to be a lot going on here. It looks like a vert with a few other pieces fused to it. My question is ..... Is this an atlas vert? It has the typical convex side, but what would be the concave side has a small bone fused to it that seems complete. I'm wondering if this is where the skull would articulate. Thanks for looking. JohnJ
Gary, it's a very nice find. I'm thinking axis vertebra with a fused 'atlas centrum', one of the four bones that make up a mosasaur atlas vertebra. What does the bottom view look like? The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
garyc
Thanks, John! Here are 3 shots of different views of the bottom. Looks like another bone is fused there.
JohnJ
Yep, axis vertebra with part of the atlas. Every genus doesn't look the same, but they are similar enough you can get the idea from this figure in Russell's Systematics and Morphology of American Mosasaurs. 1 The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ

believerjoe
Very nice! I found a piece before and your find confirms the bone I had. Nothing as nice as this though.
