Jocassee Tiger
I have seen lots of really cool crab fossils here that appear to have been chiseled out of rock. My question, how do you know there is a crab in the rock before you start scraping?
CH4ShotCaller
The shape of the concretion is the key, often there's a leg tip or a partial exposure when examined closely. Kidney bean shape is great, lemon shapes are good too. But, they could be inside weird shapes that often have a double. ynot
Acording to this http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/64635-thoughts-on-this-crab-con/ they have a picture of the crab on the outside! Tony PS Sorry but I could not resist. Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Raggedy Man
I would also think the location is just as important as the shape of the concretion. I can find rocks that look just like these crab concretions here in Wisconsin, but that doesn't mean there's one in there. ...I'm back.
PRK
It's that way even here in the PNW
