Fossildude19 Posted May 22, 2016 Share Posted May 22, 2016 The fish is actually a Chinese fish, called Lycoptera davidi. More images here. It is real, however, it is not a great specimen. They often have that yellowish or orangeish hue to them - I don't believe this to be augmented. The "lizard" is a fanciful creation, carved into the stone and painted. sdsnl Posted May 22, 2016 Share Posted May 22, 2016 As Fossildude19 said it is a Lycoptera davidi. It is from the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous and is very common in Liaoning, China. It is a fresh water fish and was preserved due to burial by volcanic ash. If you are considering buying it, don't pay a high price for it. Can you try to describe the technique how they faked the lizard - would be very interesting to know. Is it a just painted-on or are the "bones" somehow elevated and carved out? I saw so many of them in the internet, but could never get my hands on one of them (without buying one). Thanks Daniel Daniel, To me, on this one, it appears that they have carved out or engraved just the area of the head and vertebrae. Then they painted in the bones. In some of the others I have seen, it appears that they actually try to carve out or engrave the stone around the "individual bones". Tricky.
