Found in Kenting, Taiwan. The surrounding rocks are an coral reef which, if I understand correctly, is from the Miocene. It is about 20 inches long and is very hard. The black parts seem to be burn marks.

I don't really see any decapod texture or morphology.

I wonder if the black isn't carbonization of something.

I have to agree with Tim as far as it possibly being crab. But if it was holy moly. When i saw it, I thought of how a sting ray looks buried in the sand when you see it at night by light while flounder gigging. But again, it is not that either. I think a very cool geologic feature.

Are you going to attempt to dig it out? If you do PLEASE post more pictures. That is the most eye popping, jaw dropping, crab looking thing! I hope it is, but if it isn't it's still a really nice looking piece. Let us know if you get a definite ID on it!

(My face when I saw that )

I'm with you on the giant arthropod as far as appearances go and if turns out to be a pseudofossil its pretty convincing ... worth letting an expert take a look definitely. Dont think I'd like that one pinching my foot either.

Thanks, I don't really know what to look for to identify a crab :P

Unfortunately that's the best picture I have and I have already left the country. I wish I had taken more pictures!

There are two prominent bumps on the left side of the carapace, proving that this can't be a carapace. It's a geologic feature. I would view this upside down, and declare it to be a giant clam. =-)

I'm not familiar with the fossil fauna of the Kenting area, but reading this document I have a strong geological vibe on what could be the "crab carapace". Please take a look ! From convergent plate margin to arc-continent collision-Formation of the Kenting Mélange, southern Taiwan.compressed.pdf

Anyway, plenty of fossils in the surrounding rocks.

Yes, i clearly see a coral at the up of the right side of the photo. I also see pieces of shells. Edited by fifbrindacier
