Bone frag question

Recommended Posts

I found this larger bone frag at the peace a couple weeks ago and I noticed some strange wear/scratches on the sides of it. Is this just wear from the river, or were there rodent chewing on the bones for nutrients prior to burial?

Are you sure it is bone?

My first reaction would be dugong rib , heavily mineralized and makes up the vast majority of larger bones found in the peace river. Thisbone has been bounced around the rough and tumble Peace River flood stages with a lots of other similar bones and rocks year after year for possibly millions of years. I would think not chewed just splintered, but I am not positive on that..

The gouges don't seem to be random, as would they be if produced by transport collisions. Therefor, my guess is that the marks are predator or scavenger tooth marks. Sharks are the best guess.
