vasili1017
Hey everyone, I'm planning a trip to Greece in August and would like to incorporate some fossil exploration. Are there any famous / well known sites for collecting in Greece? Edited July 4, 2016 by vasili1017

MeargleSchmeargl
I am no specialist in Greek sites, but I believe Santorini may have something worth looking forward to: http://www.fossilguy.com/gallery/plant/olive/index.htm 1 Every single fossil you see is a miracle set in stone, and should be treated as such. haventbaptized
Hello there , I happen to live in Greece. As far as I know for someone not to be considered a smuggler he/she can collect marine fossils like seashells, sea urchin, corals etc. Also, the collection of fossilized leaves is okay as long as they are not found in a protected area. Protected areas exist in Lesvos, Pikermi and Castoria i think. Some locations you might find fossils are Epidaurus ( famous for it's ammonites), Chaeronea (Hippuritidae), Ainos (Rudistacea, Hippuritidae, Radiolitidae), Matala in Crete (Clypeaster), Kos (bilvades) If by any chance happens to go to Lesvos I suggest to visit the Petrified forest of Lesbos. Here are some links from fossiel.net http://english.fossiel.net/sites/fossil_site.php?plaats=70 http://english.fossiel.net/sites/fossil_site.php?plaats=671 http://english.fossiel.net/sites/fossil_site.php?plaats=163 http://english.fossiel.net/sites/fossil_site.php?plaats=217 I hope I helped even a little bit! haventbaptized
Αρκετά ωραίοι προορισμοί μπορώ να πω Θα συνεχίσω να γράφω στα αγγλικά σε περίπτωση που ενδιαφέρεται και κάποιος άλλος. The best choise you'll have in Kefalonia is Mount Ainos. Ainos sediments are mainly made of limestone and dolomite from the Cretaceous (When Ainos was nothing more than a region of the Tethys Ocean). In these sediments you can find fossils of : bryozoa, sponge, mollusca, echinoderms etc. The most common fossils of Ainos are : Rudistacea, Hippuritidae and Radiolitidae. As for Mykonos I haven't heard anything really. But again before making any exploration possible check if it is considered as a protected area. DD1991
Greece has fossils of Miocene mammals, including deer, owls, elephants (Deinotherium, Konobelodon), and primates (Ouranopithecus, Graecopithecus).

If they can't collect at Pikermi (a site for Konobelodon), they probably can't collect other fossil mammals sites like Samos Island and Pyrgos. It's probably why we don't see many fossils on the market from Greece.
