There is a very close by ( about a half mile away ) deposit of Cretaceous TarHeel Formation where amber is found. However I do not think this wood is Cretaceous, but who knows. Thought I would share the pics, It now resides in my fossil garden around my block patio out back. I always thought they were Cretaceous but I haven't found it in place to be certain. sixgill pete Posted July 11, 2016 Author Share Posted July 11, 2016 Hi Mike. The reason I do not think this particular wood is Cretaceous is there is no exposure of any formation at the exact area. The wood only became exposed after the floods from Hurricane Floyd in '99. It is all speculation on my part. Like I said, who knows. There are some huge logs here also like on the Cape Fear, the Tar and in a creek off of the Neuse near New Bern. It's in the book "Fossil Collecting in North Carolina". It is listed in many geological references from the Tarheel and Bladen Formations. As Plax said, the amber here is very similar to amber from many locals. It varies in its colors ( lighter, darker etc...) and very rarely has any inclusions, but not unheard of. I actually have amber from 3 different N.C. locations, including Lee Creek. If I get the time over the next few days I wi;; try to dig some out and take a few pics for you.
