wildchild33
This doesn't look like most shells I see, kinda looks bony. Not sure if the imprint on top is part of it. Kidding about it being a wing but the shape was perfect! North texas Eagle Ford creek. And for those who will suggest I put it on solid surface in bright light and back up I have included that image. Scylla
could be part of a spirifer or mucospirifer brachiopod, but it is too fuzzy to tell for sure.
sixgill pete
Pictures are very blurry. But I would tend to agree with Scylla on this. Fossildude19
I think that since it was found in a Cretaceous aged area, that would rule out spiriferid brachiopod. Jeffrey P
Looks more like a partial bivalve shell to me. Probably an oyster.
wildchild33
I have a huge collection of Cretateous oysters and nothing even remotely resembles that..? Also wanted to add that the reason I didn't think it was a brachiopod is because the ridges that form the furrows are smooth, so smooth they shine in light. Every other one I see has bumpy irregular ridges. Has that worn away and now you can see the nacre?
fossiling
maybe it's a new species! let's call it hermes' wing ! Keep looking! They're everywhere!
JohnJ
Lorraine, in your first photo, I can see the wood grain in the floor is in focus. That is how far away you need to set your fossil to take your photos. Even at that distance, the focus will be better and reveal more detail. Then, you could crop the photo after that to remove unneeded background. Thank you for trying on the photos. Is this a broken specimen? BobWill
I think John is on the right track suggesting it's a broken piece of something. It also may have some matrix still attached. I could be part of some kind of scallop.
wildchild33
Hard to tell if it's broken, I had duh moment & remembered my bivalves, hope these are clear enough, the 'wing' in middle & looks to be a match to one on the top which is also the third image.
