Friday Trip to an Eastern North Carolina Quarry

I joined in with a few others for a trip into an quarry in eastern N.C. This quarry is Oligocene Belgrade and River Bend Formations.

 

It was a beautiful day for a hunt though part of the quarry was flooded from rains due to Hurricane Mathew and the rest of it was on the muddy side. The finds were not as prolific as I thought they would be after all of the rain, but still not a bad day.

 

These are some of the better finds.

All together ......... 

 

Croc teeth, the small one is 7/8 inch long and may be the best condition one I have ever found here. The larger is 1 1/16

 

     

 

a couple of Hemispristis 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch

Galeocerdo casei

The rest of the find. Gastropods, bivalves and other teeth and stuff.

Awesome finds. Maybe when the flooding clears there will be more to be had, in regards to prolific specimens.

The finds are nice however, perhaps more importantly, is the fact there is still a quarry which allows entry by collectors.

That is true, however the entry is very sparse now. Once a quarter.

Nice finds anyway. I guess somewhat milder weather will have to do its work to uncover what the hurricane churned around.

Thanks Plax. I am very fond of the casei myself. I always get a thrill when I find one of these. How is it's namesake doing? Have you heard from him lately? Hope all is well with you and the family after the storm. I am hoping I will be able to get back to work tomorrow by an extended route.The flooding is still really bad on my side of the Neuse. Will I see you next Tuesday?

  All is well here but Paul Borodin told me that Jerry Case had some minor flooding. Just his garage. Flooding still bad here also but going down. 210 still closed over the Black River and 53 closed over the North East Cape Fear. Next Tuesday? PM or text me.
