Nicolas Steno style megladon tooth display

Most of you may have heard of Nicholas Steno, a Catholic saint that also was involved in discovering the origin of fossils. His dissection of a shark lead him to realize the origin of fossil shark teeth on areas that were now land.  These were popularly thought of as being petrified snake tongues, which they called "glossopetrae."

He published a book of his observations, which included some lovely illustrations of the shark and fossil shark teeth.  I cleaned up some of these images digitally, and used one of his as a backing to a framed megladon tooth.  Anyway, there is how it came out.  I had shutterfly.com print the images 8x10 for me, and put it in a shadowbox frame.  It was pretty easy, pm me if you want a hires version digital of the background images.

Here is the image for the background (send me a PM and I will e-mail you the hi-res version suitable for printing):

Here is another one of Steno's images that would be a good alternate background to use (PM me for the hires version):

That's a first class display. It has it all, historic component, actual related fossil and on whole an attractive decor item. Did you cut the mats yourself or were they included with the shadowbox? Please give the source for the frame. Very nice.

I got the frame from Hobby Lobby.  The mat is included.  I used it because it was deeper than most picture frames (I think it is actually advertised as just a picture frame).  The tooth is pretty thick, it does not fit in perfectly, it bows the back out a little, and presses against the glass.  That does keep it steady though. I attached it with museum putty.  If you use a thinner tooth than mine, it would probably fit in this frame better.  A good alternative would be to buy an actual shadow box and have a mat cut to fit.  Hobby lobby cuts mats with a reasonable price, and you can get a 40% off coupon on their website and apply it to cutting the mat.
