Quick Trip to New Jersey

Guest

Recommended Posts

Years ago, my husband brought me to the Jersey shore for a long weekend. We thought we were hardy New Englanders, but the bone snapping cold was unlike anything we had ever felt. Our walk on the beach lasted four minutes, but while the sun was slipping behind Delaware, its fireless rays lit the waves, and I found my first fossil, a trilobite fragment.

Nearly 25 years later, we still visit New Jersey and walk the beach, and I still find a fossil or three.

Last week, I brought home  a few assorted corals and stems.

Very nice! The NJ Cretaceous gets all the glory but there is very nice fossil coral to be found in at the Jersey shore and the Pine Barrens. I especially like the one in the middle and the one to the left of it; nice finds!

I'm glad you made some good finds. Very nice. I was at Cape May last week and also found some coral. I was surprised how warm it was there. Much of the Jersey shore is unprotected from the winds and they sure can chill you to the bone, as you said. It can be just as bad up here on some beaches, but others are hidden in coves that keep the wind down a bit.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

Thank you, Frank and Fossildude. It is always a thrill to find something, no matter how small. I could understand how easily fossil hunting could become a way of life!

Pagurus, we may have crossed paths last week! Yes, thankfully it was sunny and warm. One of these days, I would like to try one of the river sites north of Cape May, but leaving the Garden State to look for shark teeth would be a hard sell for hubby!
