Jonelle
Made an impromptu trip to Venice today.. Managed to pick up a couple of teeth, even though there were a lot of people collecting.. any ideas?
mdpaulhus
I'm sure there were a lot of people out. Nice weather here in Florida now. Perhaps you are already aware of this, but the Florida Museum of Natural History has an online fossil shark tooth identification guide that is very good. It walks you through a series of questions that lead to the final identification. There is also a link on the page with definitions to help you answer the questions. The site can be found here: https://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/discover/sharks/fossil-sharks/shark-tooth-id-guide/

Jonelle
Yup it was a perfect day! Love when it's "cool" outside & I was not aware of that! @mdpaulhusI'm going to do it now I was trying to figure it out by looking at pictures but it wasn't very helpful. Thanks! Jonelle
@FossilDudeCO you should check it out! I never go down there and now I feel guilty for not going there more often I managed to snag these within an hour with only a cup and a monkey on my back.. FossilDudeCO
@Jonelle I don't know why I haven't been, everyone says it is great fun, it is only a couple of hours from the condo!
mdpaulhus
One more suggestion for you. If you don't already have it, then the book Florida's Fossils by Robin C. Brown is a good handbook for what you might find. It includes info and pictures on a lot of invertebrates and vertebrates as well as some general background on collecting in Florida, etc.

Raggedy Man
Sorry I can't help with the identification of your shark teeth, but I would like to say I LOVE THAT BOTTOM RIGHT TOOTH! It reminds me of an agate. You should toss it in the ring for VFOTM, I would. Best regards, Paul 1 ...I'm back.
Jonelle
@Raggedy Manisn't it splendid??! I couldn't believe I found that one.. it was right next to a couple who were busy looking in the water, but it has washed ashore I felt so lucky!! I am actually hoping someone can ID that one more than anything.. I'm trying the link suggested now. It might take a while ! If I can figure it out I will enter it! Thanks!! Jonelle
@FossilDudeCO we actually ventured down to caspersen! I HIGHLY recommend it! Very quiet, basically just fishermen and collectors. MUCH better than siesta for me!
sixgill pete
The thing I really like about beach collecting is the peace of being beside the ocean. Usually the finds are sparse and quite worn, but the peacefulness of being there makes it way more than worthwhile. No hustle and bustle. No hard work. The winter time is the best; no big crowds, nice and cool. I went Thanksgiving morning with my grandson. Found several teeth and a few echinoids. Nothing worth posting, but was a great time. Thanks for posting this Jonelle. Brings the peace of the beach to my computer screen for a little bit. 2 Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt behind the trailer, my desert Them red clay piles are heaven on earth I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt Patterson Hood; Drive-By Truckers May 2016 May 2012 Aug 2013, May 2016, Apr 2020 Oct 2022
Jonelle
@sixgill pete I was on the fence about it... but that does it i have to back tomorrow! It was so wonderful and serene there! I would have never equated your description with our local beach (siesta key) and it was so faboulous to enjoy the beach for the first time in a vey long time! Siesta is one of the best rated beaches in the world, but it is over crowded and I'm lucky to get a glimpse of the gulf with all of the gazebos and people running around--better not look down at the shells too long there, because you will get hit by a flying ball I am so happy I decided to take the short drive to Venice.. i felt like I was in another country! I want to go when the tide is low and before everyone is out there sifting.
Darktooth
Unfortunetly the teeth are very worn which makes it tough to give a positive identification. But I will go out on a limb and say the bigger brown colored one is a mako. Congratulations on having a great day to hunt with your lil monkey. Lol. I like Trilo-butts and I cannot lie. The nice thing about the beaches here in North Carolina is in the winter they are pretty much deserted except for a few hardy souls. tmaier
That specimen in the first photo is a juvenile human, and it is illegal to collect those. You can do catch-and-release, however. They are part of the natural ecosystem.

caldigger
Sometimes you can actually utilize those juvenile ones to find lots of fossils since they are proportioned to be closer to the ground and have young eyes that pick out unusual shapes. But I agree, you must set them free afterwards or you may be subject to strong fines. However, if you obtain a free collectors permit from the state, you can keep one per day or a limit of six per calendar year.

After a full day at the beach dont ask what some parents would prefer to take home. I used to be a Scout leader and its amazing how many fossils a pack of 20 Wolf Cubs can find. They Are closer the ground and have acute eyesight. The only downside is answering 'is this something?' 500 times.

I used one of my juvenile humans to find mushrooms, he was always sitting beside a good one, always. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
