Because of the bad weather of the last two weeks I’ve started the prep work of a Upper Triassic/Carnian ammonoid block59062f0244688_asfound.thumb.JPG.b91ea3c26713028fcd67165a44e66d62.JPG

found on my first trip this year.

8 hours of prep later.

Most work is done. Only a little fine tuning/prepping is still to do. One othocone isn't glued back. I am not sure but maybe I remove it. I made it wet that one can better guess the colour though the flash light of the camera do not really show the true colours.5.thumb.JPG.7f4d301fc70b4d00238f5069b747ae34.JPG.

Pretty interesting display piece. How many ammos in all, 13? 14?

I like the orthocones, Where does the other one fit? (maybe in my collection  ;) just kidding)

Hi, Wrangellian

The red contour is the missing orthocone Nautiloid.

Ammonoids; on block are 9 specimen consisting of the following spezies:

2 Monophyllites simonyi

3 Arcestes cf. ausseeanus

4 Arcestes gaytani

5 Megaphyllites jarbas

6 Sageceras haidingeri (small specimen on back side)

7 Pompeckjites layeri

1 Syringoceras sp.(Nautiloid)

8 ?Atractites sp.

9 Aulacoceras sp

Other ammonoid parts found during prep work.

Clionites sp.

? cf."Protrachyceras hymenes"

Celtites cf. rectangularis

Arcestes cf. mojsisovicsi

The Julian age(=lower Carnian) of the block is evidenced by the ammonoids Monophyllites simonyi HAUER, Pompeckjites layeri (HAUER) and Sageceras haidingeri (HAUER). Because of some Tuvalian(upper Carnian) Tropites in the upper part of the thick oxidic crust(which was behind 1,2,3) I tend(guess) to an uppermost Julian age of the block. Some Clionites sp. and Celtites cf. rectangularis in this block are very similar to Clionites and Celtites species of a lower Tuvalian fauna from the same area.

Maybe I will finish work tomorrow and picture the result.

kind regards

andreas

There is a lot going on in that piece - lots of species. I think it might make it even better to reunite the loose othocone, but that's just me.

Thank you all for your nice coments! That encourages me to do more prep work. I have to admit that I was a little bit lazy in prepping the last past months.
