On a plane to north carolina

Hello all... I am on a plane to coastal North  carolina.  On the way to the airport, a friend called and thought there was a quarry near Wilmington where they allow fossiling on wed and fri mornings.  Can any of you north carolinians confirm or help me out?  I am going to visit my wife's family at Ocean Isle beach.  I did manage to find a crab claw on the beach last time we went.

Many thanks, y'all.

Good luck out there, on my short list for sure:) those folks are known for their hospitality

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

There were a few Martin-Marrietta quarries that used to allow collecting on Thursday and Friday but now they don't. Two of the quarries allow collectors in one day every three months. Belgrade Quarry had their open day last week. Holden Beach and Myrtle Beach have fossils.

As Al Dente said, the quarries are now mostly a memory here in N.C. What a shame, there is so much great stuff to be found in them. All of the rivers are running high and have been all summer, so river sites are out. The only thing left is the beaches as Al Dente mentioned. You could try Greens Mill Run but that would be a rather long trip from Ocean Isle Beach.

Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt
behind the trailer, my desert
Them red clay piles are heaven on earth
I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

I heard the Carolinas had some sites with some great shark teeth. Going to SC myself in about a week.

As far as NC itself, not too familiar with it. Good luck though!

Every single fossil you see is a miracle set in stone, and should be treated as such.

If you happen to be traveling more inland at some point in your trip - happy to show you to some GMR since quarries won't be any good for you on your trip.
