InTheHowse 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2017 Stopped on the side of the road near the Petrified Forest in Arizona, to see what I could find and can't get over how much this piece seems to resemble muscle tissue, but thought that's gotta be unlikely. I did some quick research and found out there is such a thing, but it seems uncommon. Hoping people here with better eyes might be able to tell me what I am looking at. Help! InTheHowse 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2017 Sorry for not putting a ruler or coin down for reference, but to give you an idea, it's about the size of my fist.
ynot 7,085 Report post Posted August 8, 2017 My first impression is a fossil tree fern, so petrified wood. It is not a skin. OK, but how big is Your fist? (not a good scale reference)
InTheHowse 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2017 Wow, that does look a lot like some of the fossilized fern images coming up with google! At least the horizontal cut. But the side angle, or second to last image, seems a little different than the ones I am seeing, like this one that seems to be the closest to it below. Whereas my image seems to have bulges that thin at both sides every so often, rather than consistent widths all the way across. What do you think?
InTheHowse 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2017 for size, it's about 2.5 inches the long way in the first three images, and about 1 .7 inches wide. Th long side of the next image is about 3.5 inches. So it turns out it's actually not quite as big as my fist.
