bjkibz
Looking at the PA geologic map, it looks like the area this came from was deposited around the Cambrian Period. I personally think it may not be bone, but the Cambrian is not my primary period of interest. There were vertebrates in the Cambrian, but they had only just evolved and were almost exclusively jawless fishes. However the broken part of your potential fossil does appear to potentially have a bone-like cross section, but a clearer photo of that cross section would be needed. Again, the Cambrian is not my area of expertise, but i personally think it may be something other than bone. I attached the Geo Map I used for reference. JohnBrewer
No idea, but as Ron says looks rib'ish'. In order to see if it's bone we'd need to see good quality, well lit close up shots of the ends. ynot
@Kingofthekats, So it seems I may have been a little quick to assume a bone. Where was this found - hillside, river, glacial deposits? It does look like bone, but sometimes geology will make good fakes. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." ynot
What type of rock is the hill made of? Shale, limestone, granite, gravels? 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Bone will usually have a spongy look in cross section, and this does not. I don't know if this is anything else, but I personally am starting to think this may be geologic in origin. 1 "Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? I thought not. ynot
This is not granite. It looks like an iron rich mudstone. It may have fossils in it, but not bone. The end shots make Me think it is a chert concretion. It could also be a burrow cast. If the cambrian age referenced above is correct then You would only find a few shelled critters fossilized in the formation, if any fossils are there. Do some research and see if You can find a formation name for Your site. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough."
