Story69
I posted these pics the other day asking if anyone thought this was a cow femur or a bison femur. I was given a diagram that described the size of the distal end of a cow femur. I measured mine and it's a little bigger. Posting again to see if this might help with a more definitive answer. Thanks in advance. Appreciate thoughts.

BobWill
According to A Simple Comparison of Cow & Buffalo Bones by Charles Finsley "the 1992 Canadian study observed 15 characteristics of the femur, and only two of them received a confidence rating of over 90%. This can make it difficult. To be sure I recommend getting a Bos femur from a slaughterhouse or a dairy boneyard so you can make direct comparisons. A bison femur has a somewhat narrower neck leading to the ball. The ball on a bison femur also has a slight lip, overhanging the neck. You should also compare the Trochanter major which is the large curved mass opposite the ball. In Boss this feature is broader than in Bison.
