Sand sand sand and a little bit of luck at Calvert Cliffs

Well the last few storms have not been kind to the fossil hunters of the Chesapeake Bay. The summer sand has really piled up over the past few weeks not to mention vibrio. I decided to venture out yesterday and I was luck enough to find it was calm and the water was clear enough that you could just barely see the bottom in knee deep water. Well I walked almost 3 miles in the water and i managed to sneak out one 2" meg dont know how many i walked over being unable to see but alas that is part of the game. I then met up with @VAfossilguy and got to show him the cliffs at Willows and found some nice stuff I always like showing people around if I can all in all it was a great day!

That's a beautiful meg, and other beautiful teeth! I really gained more respect for all serious hunters at Calvert Cliffs last time (first time) I was there, I walked out with no sharks teeth and 1 1/2 chesapectans. Good luck on future hunts!

Nice haul! Looks like the meg has nice serrations as well.

Despite the sand I will take it over winter hunting any day!

Hey if you wanna come down again i have access to some private areas that produce a lot more teeth than the public access points and im always looking for excuses to walk

We were there this past weekend for the high, high water levels and no beaches at The Willows.

WhodamanHD  DID BETTER THAN i DID THERE...I SPENT HOURS AND CAME UP WITH ONLY ONE LITTLE CLAM SHELL AND NO TEETH.....I IMAGINE THAT IT IS THE LUCK OF THE DRAW :)

In your case yeah. I didn't know much about the geology and I think I accidentally strayed to north and was caught up in the Choptank which is mainly chesapectans and oysters, few sharks teeth.

How do you guys tell apart modern shark teeth from fossil ones?

Location is a big factor in most finds. If You are not near a shark habitat then it is safe to think the teeth are fossilized.

Color is the best indicator if You are on a beach. A modern tooth will be very white including the root. Fossil teeth are seldom white, especially the root.

Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys."

Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough."

Yes that's exactly what I meant! Good catch! I refuse to accept the theory that they were Makos to begin with. :fistbump:
