abyssunder
Dear members, I've not posted in the ID section from a long time, but I'm wondering if anyone can give me a more precise ID on these forgotten in time cones from Morocco I had in my collection. As far as I know, they are not well documented. Any suggestion is welcomed. caldigger
I believe they are a grass seed cone or sometimes called fruit cones.
RJB
Yeah, those are the seed pods of a horse tail plant, I think? Maybe Eocene, Equitacastrobus? Not sure. RB
abyssunder
Thank you for your suggestions, caldigger, RJB. Maybe they are not pine cones (as it is usually named on the selling sites). Your ideas might be revolutionary. After some research, I got the name Equicalastrobus. Here are some images from L. Grauvogel-Stamm, S. R. Ash. 1999. “Lycostrobus” chinleana, an equisetalean cone from the Upper Triassic of the southwestern United States and its phylogenetic implications. American Journal of Botany 86(10): 1391–1405. I think there could be a resemblance between the Moroccan cones and the Equicalastrobus chinleana cones. What do you think?
