Claw found on Red River, Boswell, OK

Recommended Posts

I found this fossil in a gravel bar Nov 27, 2017 south of Boswell, OK. Can anyone tell me what it is? I also, broke it in my pocket, can I super glue it back together? The shotgun shell is a spent 12 ga. 2 3/4 “ so it’s 3 inches long.

Cool find.

I frequently super glue stuff back  together. I try to use as little as possible so the glossiness of the glue does not show on the fossil. Sometimes that is hard to do though.

Welcome to the Forum. :)

My initial thought on this is suggestively shaped rock, ... but better/more pictures will tell the tale.

Regards,

Is it attracted to a magnet?

Nice find what ever it turns out to be.  You can glue it like Kim said or search gluing topics and you will find a few ways to use glue with fossils.

I mis-read the location as 'Roswell' and got very excited about the creature that may have left this behind....but it actually looks like iron..await further photos.

I didn’t have enough space to post more pics. Here is a link to a folder in iCloud. It is concave on both sides it’s faded on one side it broke in my pocket. It is not magnetic, or iron. I can only guess as to what it could be prehistoric bear, cat, or other. Thanks to all who replied!!

The 3.95 meg limit is a per post limit. You can make another "reply" to get more pictures loaded.

If You are getting a picture to big notice You can refresh the page.

It is better to post the pictures here rather than a third party link, which often go dead and leave the thread without pictures.

Better pic and I can see now that it is not iron. The bone guys will hopefully have some useful comments...

Use caution holding it in your fingers. They tend to be fused before the fossil is. ;)

Welcome to the Forum.  :)

I'm posting the cropped pictures here for posterity.

It's a piece of bone, for sure. Not a claw, however.

Maybe part of a scapula, or pelvis?

Not sure - not much of a bone guy, I'm afraid.

Maybe @Harry Pristis will have some ideas.

I may be going out on a limb here, but another possibility to consider...top of mandibular ramus, just above the hinge?

The horn (oops, claw) confusion is explained nicely by the roughness being muscle attachments on one isn't it ?

I think Dan has it . . . the ascending ramus of a mandible, before and above the hinge.  Deer would be the first taxon to eliminate, and then . . . ?
