Vcm_9
Hi everyone, first time fossil hunting and first time posting.. we went down to Beaumaris wit the kids today, and amongst some other cool finds, we found this fragment. It looks bony where there is a cross section (not obvious in the photo, but on the pedestal part that sticks out).. we aren't sure what it is.. any help? fifbrindacier
Hi and . I agree other pics are necessary, of all the side the above and the below, without shadows. Cheers, Sophie. abyssunder
Almost looks like a partial scapula. Plax
A search of Beaumaris showed a town in Wales but from the pics on the google search we are talking about Miocene? of Australia. Perhaps the rest of ya'll already knew the source of the fossil in question. All of this is conjecture of course. The fossil could possibly be a pie wedge fragment of an epiphysial plate of a vertebra.

Vcm_9
Sorry, I'm learning as I go.. yes, scapula could be right, from what, I have no idea. I'll post some pics of our other finds (although nowhere near as good as some of th e others found in the area). Yes, this is Beaumaris, Victoria, Australia, the beach is at the end of our street, and we feel very lucky to have stumbled on the news threads about it!

izak_
Went to Beaumaris last week lol. I'm so jealous you live so close to the site!! A helpful pdf: https://docs.google.com/viewerng/viewer?url=http://www.nobeaumarismarina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Fossils-of-Beaumaris.pdf. And what were your other finds? maybe @Paleoworld-101 can help?
Vcm_9
Haha, yes, we found our new favourite thing to do, especially with the kids (boys aged 6, 9) on school holidays. Other finds were not great in retrospect, will post a quick pic.. this was just at the first section, and just a quick hunt.. we had heard about the fossils, but didn't know where we are. On a random family walk, we found the site by chance! Further research for next time. we weren't sure if the triangular piece had a tooth in it(kind of looks like it) the larger limestone pieces have fossils in situ. Plax
was way off base guessing epiphysial plate of a vertebra.
fifbrindacier
You have nice urchins and coral and gasteropod there, and i guess you have more embedded in those blocs. Connah
@Vcm_9 I think what you have there is the head hump (hyperostosis), from an adult snapper. If it's light & has a faint smell to it, it's likely modern. There is though a lovely Turitella in that block you have. Happy hunting.

fifbrindacier
I think your urchins are all Lovenia woodsi. 1 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." Vcm_9
So may urchins to be found, but they are easy to spot. Still trying to identify other things at the site, I'm sure I've overlooked a lot!
