Shellseeker
Excellent day to hunt. It is warm and going to get colder over the next few days. We are finding small shark teeth and a lot of mammal materials. Up comes this rib.. at the base , it is 4.5 inches in circumference and half moon in shape, Flat on one side, curved on the other. This rib says something about the mammal, much larger than human, much smaller than mammoth or mastodon, etc.. There are only so many choices in the Peace River.. What mammal has a rib like this? caldigger
Doesn't seem to have much curvature does it? I got nothing.
MeargleSchmeargl
Chunker, no distinctive marks... Every single fossil you see is a miracle set in stone, and should be treated as such.

I have found Mammoth/Mastodon ribs... they tend to be relatively flat and significantly more robust, longer. I have found dugong ribs... they tend to be round. So for any familiar with Mammoth, it is NOT mammoth. Not Dugong A human rib is 8-9 inches, so not human. There are only so many large mammals in the Peace River. Equus, Bison, Sloth, Jaguar, Camel/llama. Maybe someone can immediately ID what it is... I am as interested in what it is NOT, and a photo of those ribs... What can we deduce from a 15 inch length of rib with a flat side and half moon like circumference of 4.5 inches? Plus it is a large mammal found in the Peace River Pleistocene. Shellseeker
I talked to a friend who has a lot of expertise on Peace River bones. He tried (unsuccessfully) in considering whether this might be some other bone than a rib, noted that it could be a lot longer than the 15 inch portion that I have, and that the vast majority of ribs are curved much more obviously than this one (you can note a slight curve under the bone in photo #2 above). Also suggested marine mammal, so I'll ask Bobby to take a look... @Boesse A couple of more photos: The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"

Boesse
No idea. It's a mammal. That's about as far as is reasonable.
Shellseeker
Thanks to all who commented. Here is a possibility that is hard to eliminate: The ruler is 36 inches and thus some of those posterior ribs are over that length. The area encircled in red is at least 15 inches and "seems" to have a similar shape. We were finding Equus Teeth and earbones... EDIT: Another photo from BoneID.net Here is a look at my finds for the day... 4 Equus teeth and an earbone in center top.
