Seguidora-de-Isis
Good morning to everyone at TFF! What exactly is this? According to the seller, this belongs to a Lepidotes pankowskii (South Taouz, Errachidia Province, South Morocco - Formation Ifezouane, Red Sandstone Beds, KemKem Basin - Upper Cretaceous, Cenomanian stage - ~96 Million Years) . It's real? Is there scientific information on this? Any and all information will be extremely useful to assist me. I thank everyone! @Troodon @LordTrilobite @Tidgy's Dad @Haravex @hxmendoza Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question!
Tidgy's Dad
Hello, sorry my friend, i have been out flying This species is described from Kem Kem : http://palaeo-electronica.org/2011_1/239/239.pdf And the specimen you post looks real and from a Lepidotes sp, but whether it is certainly from this particular species, I couldn't say Hope this helps a bit Adam 5 Life's Good! LordTrilobite
Yes Lepidotes sp. would probably be a good label. Alternatively cf. Lepidotes pankowski would also be fine. This paper specifically has info on these types of fish scales. They label the scales as cf. Lepidotes pankowski. http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0125786 Though mine are not as complete, they show enough of the morphology to be identifiable. These types of scales are pretty distinct. 5 Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite

LiamL
I wonder if mine are the same, and from kem kem? I bought these as just 'fish scales' Edit, never mind these are Lepidotes scales from the Isle of Wight, UK 1 Yorkshire Coast Fossil Hunter

caldigger
I think the reasoning behind that is people are hearing so much about Moroccan items being faked or constructed that lots are shying away from anything marked as from Morocco. Besides, being from the Isle of Wight is a far more exotic location to get stuff from. (Ya, I know. Not if you live around there!) Those are some huge scales by the way. Wow!

Tidgy's Dad
I know Lepidotes mantellii occurs on the Isle of Wight in the Wealden beds along with dinosaur remains, England's Kem Kem, you might say. I think i had one at some time. These are Isle of Wight ones. Though I believe the genus may have been changed to Scennstia ? 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend. Aurelius
These are very common from Kem Kem. I have hundreds of them, mostly fragmentary, but they get pretty big.

In fact I suspect Kem Kem's Lepidotes Fish could reach much larger sizes than this ... Perhaps new discoveries in the not-too-distant future? If this can help you or other members of this forum, I have a picture of a Spinosaurid hunting a Lepidotes Fish. I do not believe you will find this image on the internet, or at least not exactly like this. caldigger
And thats why you find so many Spinosaur teeth. They break off trying to bite down on those huge armor like scales.

Haravex
Sorry only just seen this yes this would from the paper appear to be Lepidotes .sp there are a few i have that are very similar and some that are slightly similar maybe a possibility of two from the area I can also confirm that most of these are from the upper level of the kem kem beds also known (I think) as the Ifezouane formation and I personally have never seen one in the aferous (spelling on this?) that is normally filled with Arganodus tiguidiensis and Obaichthys africanus Not saying they don't exist in this formation but based upon what i have found and what i see the Berber miners retrieving.
