Islandcoda42
My friend found this on the shore of Cape Cod the other day. She thinks it’s bone. It is solid and darker in the middle. I have no idea what the strange markings are that are on it. Looks almost like scrimshaw but I didn’t get to see the piece. I’ll post more pics when I get them. Any ideas? Islandcoda42
Thank you, I thought Bakelite kinda but she swears it’s heavy and solid. Fossil bone? Walrus tusk? Old knife handle! The pitting on the end makes me think shell column like a conch or whelk. I really have no clue. Will get more pics
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Looks like a ceramic insulator, to me. Better pictures from all sides/ends would be helpful. Also, what size is it? Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." JBMugu
My vote is for shell column, I used to find a lot of similar (but smaller) shell portions on the beach in Florida. Can you please give us a idea of the size?
JohnBrewer
I think possibly shell too. @maxfossils what do you think? John Map of UK fossil sites
Islandcoda42
It looks like shell on the pitted end but rly looks like bone on the other end. She told me that pattern is ‘embedded’ in it, cuz I asked if it was like a seaweed or net print or even glue that may have held something cuz it does look like some kind of handle. Scrimshaw would be awesome but can’t be. Sorta resembles part of a squid tho..........

abyssunder
I suppose there are borings of a condensed tube worm colony, so the material might be natural. Based on a single view of the specimen, I think it might be shell material, maybe from a very worn gastropod siphonal region. 3 " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way.
