Keichousaurus

Hello,

I saw this picture on Internet and I was wondering if the Fossil was real or fake.

It kind of looks fishy and it seems that it has been painted on...

It is almost too perfect. What do you think?

Sorry this is the only picture.

Regards, Thomas

Picture is very blurry and not enlargeable. So no definite answers possible (especially about the bones, painted/carved or not).

Overall look is ok, and matrix is (one of the) usual one.

Shape of Keich shows no alerting red flags.

But this is NOT an indication that this Keich is ok - better pics would be needed as already said.

Looks OK morphologically, but there is a lot of paint on this one.

These are commonly poorly prepared, and as a result, often painted.

The first photo is just a brightened version of the photo you posted.

The second has black and white reversed. This can sometimes show the difference between paint and actual bones.

This shows me that the ribs are mostly painted in, due to the unevenness of the rib configuration.

The last picture is just a blown up, lightened version of your original pictures.

I believe it shows that nearly the whole thing is painted over, to disguise poor prep or lack of bones.

Ooh okay thank you a lot.

So what you think is that it is carved and then painted? Its 100% fake or partially?

I see this sold on ebay as a replica for 50 dollars. It would be a nice for replica at that price.p

You know this Keichousaurus looks a bit familiar I think I saw it online for sale as well. But to me it looks fine.

Life started in the ocean. And so did my interest in fossils;).

It's very hard to tell much about it from that photo, except that it appears to be substantially genuine. Impossible to be 100% sure about compositing or painting.

Here is a better image of the ribs. And it appears to have stomach content.

The eye sockets look weirdly big compared to my two and the ones i've seen online.

The eye sockets are of the right proportion. It depends on whether it’s on ventral or dorsal position.  Compared the two below.

I think this is a genuine one but some parts are painted.  As usual, this is an acid prepped specimen with much of the bones corroded.

And Keichousaurus are unusually well preserved fossil and so many would think such nice specimens must be fake, which is not true.

Looks good to Me, but the tail is either over or under prepped (can't tell which).

Wait for other opinions.

The tail in this case is over prepped by acid.
